Entrepreneurship Workshop (Aug 5, 2024) held at the Tboli Community Library and Culture Hub, hosted in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry- South Cotabato and Filipino Americans of Northern California Organization (FANCO)

Tradition X Innovation brought together artisans, community leaders, cultural advocates, and partners in Lake Sebu, South Cotabato for a day of learning focused on strengthening traditional arts through practical knowledge and mentorship.

Held in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) South Cotabato, the entrepreneurship workshop explored areas that can help artisans navigate the contemporary landscape while continuing to honor the cultural knowledge behind their work. Participants included artisans practicing T’nalak weaving, jewelry making, brasscrafting, beadwork, embroidery, and other traditional and creative arts.

The workshop covered:

  • Branding and Marketing: Exploring ways to communicate an artisan’s identity, story, and cultural significance while reaching wider audiences.
  • Quality Assurance: Discussing consistency, quality standards, and practices that help maintain the integrity of handmade work.
  • Packaging and Shipping: Introducing practical approaches to protecting handcrafted works and preparing them for safe transportation.
  • Logistics: Looking at ways to organize materials, production, storage, and distribution more effectively.
  • Funding Opportunities: Introducing potential pathways to financial support, including grants, loans, and other resources that can help artisans develop their work.

A central part of the gathering was the launch of Apprentice to Artisan, an after-school initiative created to support the next generation of artisans, particularly descendants of Dreamweavers and artisan families. Through mentorship, hands-on learning, and exposure to both traditional practice and contemporary skills, the initiative aims to encourage young people to develop their abilities while remaining connected to their cultural heritage.

The program reflects an important part of cultural preservation: ensuring that traditional knowledge does not remain only in the past, but continues to be learned, practiced, and carried forward by younger generations.

Tradition X Innovation was made possible through collaboration among artisans, community organizations, government partners, cultural leaders, funders, and supporters. Together, the workshop and Apprentice to Artisan initiative demonstrate how mentorship, education, and community partnership can help create pathways for traditional arts to thrive across generations.
